Queen Garnet Plum high in Anthocyanins
QUEEN GARNET PLUM
The Queen Garnet plum is a new hybrid variety of plums that resulted From a breeding program carried out by Dr Bruce Topp and Dougal Russell of the Queensland Department of Primary Industries.
The Queen Garnet plum has a very dark flesh and is also a dark skinned fruit. The anthocyanins are the chemicals responsible for the dark colouring and Lab Testing has shown that the anthocyanin levels in the Queen Garnet Plums are significantly higher than commercial plum varieties currently in production having been consistently measured at 150-280mg/100g. Whereas most commercially grown plum varieties are in the 5-30mg/100g range.
The best competitor is Black Diamond plum, which had been labelled as “The High Antioxidant Plum” however the Queen Garnet plum has twice the anthocyanin content of Black Diamond, Plus three times greater quercetin glycoside content.
Organic green grocers are already getting supplies of the fruit and some say they mainly buy the Queen Garnet plum for a good eating plum.

NASAA Promotes Organics at Biofach
Australia general manager of The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Mr Ben Copeman presented a keynote speech at BioFach China last week
BIOFACH is the World’s leading Trade Fair for Organic Food.
Mr Copeman used his speech to build awareness of the Australian organic market, focusing on how local organic regulations differed between markets.
He also reaffirmed the Australian industry’s stance on genetic modification, and noted the potential opportunity for Australian organic products to be exported to China, an,d addressed Chinese distributors

Whole Foods losing Organics Lead in U.S.
Whole Foods may lose its place as the main seller of organic foods in the USA.
The Seattle Times has reported that research notes by BMO Capital Markets indicates that Costco should overtake Whole Foods as the main U.S. retailer of organic foods.
Costco might be surpassing Whole Foods this year as the top seller of organic food in the US, The Seattle Times reports based on a research note by BMO Capital Markets.
According to the report Costco said in a recent earnings forecast that it is budgeting to sell $US4 billion in organic food for 2015, the company said on a recent earnings call. This would be way higher than the $US3.6 billion forecast in organic food sales estimated for Whole Foods annual sales.
According to chief financial officer, Richard Galanti, Costco’s sales of organic food products growth have more than doubled in the last three years
“It’s where we shine in terms of quality and value and I think that’s nothing but a positive for us going forward ” he said.
Major grocers such as Costco, Kroger, and Wal-Mart have expanding their organic product ranges in recent years making the sector increasingly more competitive, forcing early leaders such as Whole Foods to lower prices.
